Family Law

When relationships break down it is often a traumatic time. Widdows Mason are experts in the field of Family Law. The Family Department prides itself on the calibre of its Lawyers, and has seven members of Resolution (formerly known as the Solicitors Family Law Association) within the Department, several of whom (Sharon Ferguson, Paul Ireland and Louise Cadman) have Resolution Accredited Specialist status.

Client care is of prime importance to all members of the Family Department and we provide all of our clients with the best legal advice and representation together with an excellent and client focussed service.

We are able to deal with difficult and complex problems in a sensitive, constructive and cost effective way ensuring that our advice is focused on client's individual needs. Wherever possible we aim to achieve settlement of cases through negotiation rather than, what can be, expensive litigation.

Our work is accredited by the Legal Services Commission to ensure the delivery of an effective legal service through a high standard of legal knowledge backed by quality systems and procedures. Public Funding (Legal Aid) may be available.

Children Issues

Our specialists in Child Law can help with any problems you may have to do with where a child should live; frequency, timing and structure of contact with a child, and other issues for instance relating to schooling, medical treatment, etc.

When a relationship ends and two people separate, the interests of any children involved need to be put first. We specialise in dealing with children issues effectively and sympathetically. We will help you to reach agreement where possible, but where agreement cannot be reached we will take swift action to re-establish structure following relationship breakdown. We can also advise on Parental Responsibility and how unmarried fathers and other individuals can obtain the same. The Department also deals with children disputes involving Local Authorities.

Divorce and Separation

Our Family Law specialists at Widdows Mason have years of experience in dealing with relationship breakdown.

Whether a married couple or (since December 2005) a same sex couple in a civil partnership, we can help resolve the tricky issues which arrive when the relationship comes to an end. Cohabiting couples similarly require assistance in finding their way through the complicated processes which apply.

Effective representation is an important part of 'moving on'. The law on separation and divorce can be complicated, and unless your lawyer has the skills and experience needed to secure the best outcome for you, unnecessary pain can be caused.

Emergency Protection

Relationship breakdown is traumatic enough, but sometimes immediate action is required.

A victim of violence is entitled to immediate protection and we can assist in securing that protection.

The parent of a child may need to have that child returned to their care, or for a Court order to be made to put in place a structure of contact or to set out where the child should live.

Our specialists can advise on what you need to do to protect your interests fast and take the necessary action.

Family Finances

We at Widdows Mason have years of experience in securing the best and fairest deal for those involved in a relationship breakdown. We can identify the most appropriate means of achieving your goals for maintenance, lump sums, property transfers and pension sharing.

We are able to resolve the most complex financial affairs. Whatever your financial circumstances one of our experts will be able to assist in dealing with your financial interests including property, bank accounts, investments, business interests and pension entitlements.
